Port Royal neglected
published: Tuesday | August 21, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I would like to thank you for publishing the article on the gross negligence of our Government in regard to the preservation and development of our history.

Port Royal or 'Porty' as it is known by its residents has been thrown into the garbage by our leaders. To think that the vast heritage of this town has been so severely disregarded by the leaders is grossly unacceptable.

Historical sites all over the world enjoy a great deal of exposure and development due to the willingness of their private sector members and government backing. Do the leaders of our country not understand that we are a blessed people to have so much history to look back at as a reference point for our future development? That post office which is now little more than a couple of sticks with graffiti is one that I visited regularly with my grandmother as a young man. Yes, I lived in Port Royal and I have heard the stories and seen the proposals, the sketches and all the 'big talk' by people in power, only to see nothing done.

Is it that hard to follow through on promises? Is it that hard to give the people what they want? Is is that hard to preserve the history of our country? Talking obviously hasn't produced anything. Cans of paint and free bread can't buy the people anymore.Manifestos and pledges just are not enough once these historical sites are gone. Bottom line is this, if you don't care for it, you will lose it.

I am, etc.,

MICHAEL BROOKS
