Two goals from striker Shenika Williams saw Maverley-Hughenden off to a solid start in Sherwin Williams Women's Colour Scape knockout first round matches, with a 2-0 win over promoted Meadhaven United at the Duhaney Park field yesterday.
"We had a fairly good game today but we looked a bit indisciplined at times and we will be looking to improve on that before our nextfixture," said Maverley-Hughenden's coach Glenroy Flowers.
"Our next match against the Portmore Strikers will be a much more challenging fixture and we are going to have to work very hard to get ready for that one," he added.
Early goal for williams
Williams got her name on the scoresheet as early as the third minute, slipping past a defender at the edge of the 18-yard area, she went on to drift past two more before firing past Meadhaven goalkeeper Yanike Anderson.
The striker, finding herself in almost an identical position 10 minutes later, came up with the same result to put her team two goals up.
The newly promoted team missed a golden opportunity to put themselves on the scoresheet when Davia Smith's 67th-minute effort came crashing back into play off the crossbar.
At the Elliston Wakeland Centre in Trelawny, it was Monique Johnson who came up with a two-timer, to see her side safely past Reno 2-0.
Half-time lead
Johnson opened the scoring with a goal in the 19th minute, which was good enough for a half-time lead. The player then put the issue beyond doubt when she found the back of the net again in the 86th minute.
At Cling Cling Oval: Sydonnie Hall also had two goals, and her team Olympic Gardens were the biggest winners of the day with a 4-0 thrashing of St. Catherine team Upliftment.
Alecia Mullings opened the scoring for the home team in the 25th minute, Tuwana Thompson added another goal in the 49th, while Hall netted her goals in quick succession in the 62nd and 67th minute.
The day's other game between Arnett Gardens and Seaview Gardens, which was scheduled for the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex, was not played as Seaview failed to show up for the fixture.
