HOVE, Sussex (CMC):

Jamaican pacer Daren Powell suffered defeat with his English county team Hampshire in a Pro40 Division One match against Sussex yesterday.

Playing at County Ground, Hove, visiting Hampshire scored 260 for seven off their 40 overs after choosing to bat, and Sussex replied with 261 for eight off 38.5 overs for a two-wicket victory.

Powell picked up two for 54 off eight overs and shared six wickets with his captain Shane Warne and Sean Ervine but could not contain the Sussex run chase.

Brilliant start

Michael Lumb (108) and John Crawley (68) got Hampshire off to a brilliant start, 147 for the first wicket.

Ervine also lashed a 41-ball 56 as fast bowler James Kirtley led the Sussex bowling with five for 36.

Captain Chris Adams led by example for Sussex in the run chase with a 49-ball 70 to steer the home side to their victory with seven balls to spare.

Warne had identical figures to Powell of two for 54 off eight overs and Ervine bagged two for 49 off 5.5 overs.
