In all her glory, Flair's queen for a day is ready to take the crown
Come August 18, sixteen beautiful young women will vie for the title of Miss Jamaica World 2007. Quite a lot of preparation goes into transforming them into the visions of loveliness you will see on coronation night. Flair sought out those responsible for the transformation for answers.
Keeping the contestants in the Miss Jamaica World pageant looking glamorous at all times may seem like a difficult task. But for the experts at Maybelline New York and SoftSheen-Carson, 'glamour' is easy to create. From appropriate make-up and hair styles for the different segments of the competition, they have things covered.
Softsheen-Carson officially returned to the pageant three years ago according to senior brand manager, Andreen Bennett.
With a commitment to the development of young women in Jamaica, Ms. Bennett says the competition allows thecompany to reach its target audience.
"We (Softsheen-Carson), are predominantly for women, and it's a competition that helps with the development of women in Jamaica and we are committed to that," she told Flair.
But before the beauties are styled by Softsheen, there are certain considerations.
Trichologist and technician consultant with Softsheen-Carson Karl Richmond, says an analysis of the hair has to be done, to ensure that it is in good condition. The girls are also educated on proper hair care.
"Styles are based on the hair texture and the shape of the face," explained Richmond. A good grasp on hair texture is important as the competition features a variety of textures.
"This year we have two real Caucasians and that kind of hair can't work with oils, so we have to come up with a and that is polish to help with the sheen," he added.
Facial shape is important when creating a hair style he pointed out. "For a round face, we would leave mor on the top as this elongates the face."
For the competition, two full-fledged technicians with two assistants work with the contestants. Creating glamorous pageant hair takes 20 minutes.
Makeup
For makeup, Maybelline New York is on board. They have been responsible for doing the make-up of the pageant for the last four years, according to Marlene Gray, managing director of Face Essentials the official local distributor.
Their products are ideal for the pageant and the Jamaican woman. "Our products target all skin tones: light, medium and dark," Ms. Gray said. Consumers need not look any further than the pageant for examples of the versatility of Maybelline New York's products.
To bring to life Soft Sheen Carson and Maybelline New York's products, Tiffany Williams of Elite Entertainment, volunteered to be beauty queen for a day. The professionals went to work and came up with two looks one for swimwear and another for formal dress.
