Commonwealth Games champions Sherone Simpson and Brigitte Foster-Hylton, along with 2005 silver medallist Michael Frater, were left out of Jamaica's squad announced yesterday for the 11th IAAF World Championships in Osaka, Japan.
However, according to a special notation on the list of names released by the Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association (JAAA) yesterday, Simpson and Foster-Hylton could still benamed in the team by Monday, August 13, which is the final date for the submission of athletes competing at the championships.
Frater had failed to qualify for the final at the National Championships.
The notation said: "The JAAA wishes to announce that a decision will be taken regarding Sherone Simpson and Brigitte Foster-Hylton according to our rules by the August 13, 2007 deadline to submit final entries to the IAAF."
According to that JAAA rule: "Athletes with top-three world ranking who are ill or injured at the time of the National Championships may still be considered for selection, but they must prove their world ranking form prior to the final submission of the entries for the competition."
The two were not able to challenge for automatic qualification because they missed the National Championships which was used to select the team.
Simpson was injured while competing at the June 15 Golden League in Oslo, Norway, and Foster-Hylton, after reporting for her race, made a late withdrawal, also because of injury.
Since the National Champion-ships, in two races, Simpson - who recorded the fastest times last year over 100m (10.82) and 200m (22.00 twice) - has clocked 11.75 seconds in Monaco and 11.61 on Tuesday in Stockholm, while Foster-Hylton has not run since May 5, when she finished firstat the Jamaica International Invitational in 12.71 seconds.
RECORD HOLDER
Meanwhile, World 100m record holder Asafa Powell and Olympic 200m champion Veronica Campbell head Jamaica's team, which is scheduled to meet in Tottori, Japan, for a two-week training camp, starting Saturday, August 11.
Both athletes, who were winners of their events at the National Championships - Powell 10.04 in the men's 100m and Campbell 10.89 and 22.39 over 100m and 200m, are favourites for gold medals in Osaka.
In seven outings this season over 100m, Powell has recorded three sub-10 clockings while Campbell also recorded the same number of sub-11 clockings over the short sprint.
