Jamaica in strong position
published: Monday | August 6, 2007

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (CMC):

Their susceptibility to fast bowling again exposed, Guyana's top order was blown away on a two-paced track with preparation moisture by lively Jamaican fast bowler Jason Dawes on the opening day of their fourth round TCL Under-19 Challenge match yesterday.

Kellon Carmichael was Guyana's top scorer with an unbeaten 20 as the defending champions, tormented by Dawes with figures of five for 21 off 7.5 overs, crashed to 66 all out, 17 minutes after lunch at the Edgar Gilbert Park.

The Jamaicans then recovered from 27 for three to reach 170 for five, for a lead of 104 runs by the close, with Shacoya Thomas stroking three fours and a six for 41 runs.

Skipper Derval Green (34 not out) and Marlon Hoilette (30 not out) have put together 69 in an unfinished sixth-wicket partnership so far to keep Jamaica in control.

At Cayon: Trinidad and Tobago, replying to the Windward Islands' first innings score of 235, reached 58 for one at the close of the opening day of their fourth-round match yesterday.

WINDWARD ISLANDS 235 (Keddy Lesporis 63, Johnson Charles 63, Lindon Lawrence 38, Dawnley Grant 25; Varoon Samaroo 4-73, Marlon Richards 2-29).

TRINIDAD & TOBAGO 58-1 (Milton Dookran 29 not out, Darren Bravo 14 not out)

At Conaree: Barbados, replying to the Leeward Islands' first innings score of 144, reached 104 for two at the close of the opening day of their fourth-round match yesterday. Play started an hour late at 11:00 because of a wet area at the bowlers' run-up.

LEEWARD ISLANDS 144 (Chesney Hughes 41, Moreland LeBlanc 22; Shamarh Brooks 3-22, Dawayne Sealy 3-24, Ashley Nurse 3-28).

BARBADOS 104-2 (Kyle Corbin 77 not out).

T&T win: Meanwhile, Trinidad and Tobago emerged champions of the 2007 West Indies Women's Cricket tournament when they beat St. Lucia by 75 runs in their final round game yesterday.

The victory at the Passage Road Ground vaulted Trinidad and Tobago to 11 points, two ahead of Barbados, whose game against Grenada was rained out.

The Jamaica-St Vincent and the Grenadines match was also rained out.
