Queens of yesteryear
published: Monday | August 6, 2007

Marlene Murray, Miss Jamaica 1962, is crowned by Marguerite Lewars, the previous year's queen. At left is third-place runner-up Barbara Casseres, and Nolia Skipton (right), second-place winner.

In the 1960s, Jamaica had one party after another. In 1962 there was an independence to celebrate. In 1963, the most beautiful girl in the world, Carol Crawford-Mekens won The Miss World crown.

In 1976, Cindy Breakspeare brought the crown back home and in 1993, Lisa Hanna made us proud again. Whether they wore the crown of Miss World, Miss Jamaica, or Miss Independence, they were all queens.

In 1963, Jamaica produced its first Miss World, Carol Crawford (centre) with Jean Murray (left), first runner-up, and second runner-up Merle Fray.

Miss Jamaica 1969, Marlyn Taylor.

Miss Independence 1972, Rita Faye Chambers with her chaperone Mrs. Sintra Barrington.

Miss Festival 1871, June Ramsay (seated), receives her crown from Miss Festival 1970, Pamela Bunting.
