National Visual Arts Competition - Showing off national pride
Although sympathetic to popular culture, as an art historian I have been taught to be critical and discriminating. This is not always a good thing because that education can also turn you into an art snob, dismissive of anything that does not follow the respected canon of fine art.
Art at the heart of the city
As the air thickens with the highlights of our culture, there is more to be learnt through the visual arts. Located in the Kingston Mall, the National Gallery displays visual expressions in paintings, drawings, sculpture, installation art, photography and ceramics on Ocean Boulevard.
Book review - Heavy with nostalgia, nuances of life in rural Jamaica

Literary arts - After the incident
In his dream, a raven, black as night, was perched atop a dark evergreen tree. The landscape was stark and desolate, the trees, stripped of their leaves, scarecrows against a dull grey sky. The asphalt road was a melancholy, washed-out grey, the houses a forlorn echo of each other - a sorry sight to eyes that had feasted on the bright blues, sunny yellows and lush greens of the Caribbean, where sounds, sights and smells assaulted the senses all at once.
