NOTE-WORTHY: Campaign shame
published: Thursday | August 2, 2007

Campaign shame

It is a shame to see how our leaders are behaving on the campaign trail. On First News on TVJ Monday morning, July 30, scenes were shown from both political parties' meetings and one wonders the way these leaders portray themselves if they are suitable to lead a country.

It also clearly demonstrates how petty our leaders are, where they continue to throw words at each other while neglecting major and important issues that need immediate attention.

I am imploring our leaders to stop majoring on the minor and be role models for our people and in particular the youths, or our society will only get worse.

Railway cost

A railway network to Portmore will cost billions of dollars and many years to build and where will the money for the infrastructure come from?

The minority of people who pay taxes nationwide, as well as those in Portmore and of course the travelling passengers (just like the toll users), will have to pay.

In other words, to coin a phrase, there is no such thing as a free lunch; at the end of the day someone has to pay.

If Mr. Golding and the Labour Party want to be taken seriously, then they must not only cost their proposal but must also say how they are going to meet the cost.

This is especially necessary given the many years of criticism by the party about the high level of national debt and government borrowing.

'Fit to be raped!'

I write with much disappointment in my heart. Just when you thought that our political leaders could not sink any lower, they establish new lows.

Listening to Prime Time News on TVJ on the evening of July 30 was an embarrassment. Desmond McKenzie, in his response to Roger Clarke, stated that ' "He (Clarke) is not fit to be raped".

I would like to ask, is anyone fit to be raped? Is it a punishment or reward? This comment is a setback to all those who fight for rape victims in our society.

Why make such a crass, nasty and unbelievably illiterate statement? Shame on you, Desmond McKenzie (and Bruce Golding for standing on the same platform).

You do not win points by sinking to the depth of your opponent. As a woman, you will never have my vote!
