Banks may land deal with Somerset
published: Friday | July 27, 2007

Banks

TAUNTON, England (CMC):

The Leewards and West Indies off-spinning all-rounder Omari Banks is hoping to secure a contract with English county cricket side Somerset, Sky Sports has reported.

Banks has been given a trial by Division Two leaders Somerset at their Taunton cricket ground. The lanky off-spinner is hoping to earn a contract for the next county season.

The 25-year-old Anguillan has played 10 Test matches and five one-day internationals for the West Indies.

Banks is not foreign to English conditions as he was once a part of fellow county side Leicestershire's second XI in 2001.

He holds a British passport, but because he has played international cricket he will not be available as a non-oversees player until next summer.

Banks will be given a chance to prove himself in a second XI fixture later this week.

"He has played 10 Tests, taking 28 wickets and with a batting average of 26.5, which suggests he has some talent," Somerset's director of cricket, Brian Rose, stated on the club's official website.

"We will play him in a couple of second XI fixtures this week and take it from there," Rose said.
