Leader of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), Bruce Golding, talks with enthusiastic supporters at a JLP rally in Mandeville square, Sunday, July 1. - Ian Allen/Staff Photographer Today we start a new feature where we get the views of an uncommitted voter on statements made by politicians and other public figures during the current election campaign.
TOPIC: Bruce Golding's offer of free education at the primary/secondary levels and of reimbursement of fees to parents who havealready paid.
VIEWPOINT: Hopeton Henry, president of the Jamaica Teachers Association: "(For the JLP) to come out ... and bring the issue of cost-sharing to the fore will have the issue of stopping the flow of school fees coming from parents. This ... will put the secondary system in a tailspin. Parents already owe schools millions of dollars ... this, in my view, is going to encourage opportunistic (behaviour) and schools are going to struggle to meet other needs."
HOW UNCOMMITTED VOTER INTERPRETS: "Is the JLP certain that they have adequately and accurately thought out this plan of waiving and/or cost-sharing school fees? Are they ready to deal with the possible drawbacks that this plan will present? Will they even have enough money allocated in their budget to accommodate and maintain this plan, given how strained the Government's budget appears from time to time with various projects?"
