Jamaica finish sixth at Pan Am Juniors
published: Tuesday | July 10, 2007

Bobby-Gaye Wilkins wins gold in 400m.

Jamaica finished sixth in the final medal standings at the Pan American Junior track and field championship which ended in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Sunday.

The Jamaican athletes won 11 medals, comprising one gold, five silver and five bronze medals.

Trinidad and Tobago, on the back of their two outstanding gold medal performances, emerged the top Caribbean team. T&T's athletes collected two gold, five silver and three bronze medals to place fourth in the final medal standings.

The U.S.A. led all nations with 48 medals, 24 gold, 16 silver and eight bronze medals, followed by Canada, with four gold, five silver and four bronze, and Brazil (3-2-6).

Cuba finished fifth with two gold, three silver and three bronze medals.

Trinidad and Tobago captured the Boys' 4x400-metre relay gold medal on the last day of the meet Sunday, clocking three minutes 05.70 seconds to beat the USA (3:06.15) at the Icaro de Castro Melo Stadium.

It was the first ever win in the Boys' 1600-metre relay for T&T and only the third time in the last 10 Pan Am Junior championships that the Americans were failing to land the gold medal.

An upset

That gold medal triumph came the day after Keston Bledman upset Jamaican sensation Yohan Blake to land the marquee Boys' 100-metre title on Saturday in 10.32 seconds for T&T.

Jamaica and The Bahamas collected the only other English-speaking Caribbean gold medals at the meet.

Bobby-Gaye Wilkins won the Girls' 400 metres for Jamaica in a smart time and championship record of 51.72 seconds, and Bahamian Jamal Wilson won the Boys' high jump at 2.11 metres.

Dominant U.S.A. swept 20 medals on the final day to consolidate their position at the top of the medal table.
