( L - R ) Usain Bolt, Tyson Gay Top Jamaican sprinters, Asafa Powell, Veronica Campbell and Usain Bolt, will be in action today at the Athletissima Meet, a Super Grand Prix event in Lausanne.
Powell, who's returning from injury, loses top billing because he will only appear in a specially-arranged relay, so it's Bolt's clash with American Tyson Gay over 200 metres that will spark most interest at the star-studded meet.
World 100m record holder Powell has not run since hurting his groin at the National Championships on June 23, but hismanager Paul Doyle said yesterday that he will be running the sprint relay in Lausanne today to test his readiness for Friday's Golden Gala in Rome.
He will be joined on the team by Michael Frater, Ainsley Waugh and Nesta Carter.
"Right now we are looking to do Rome on Friday," Doyle said.
Minor injury
However, according to Doyle, the injury Powell picked up at the National Championships was not as bad as they previously thought.
"He has no damage to the muscle," he said.
"He had five days of intensive treatment and was training through that."
Meanwhile, Bolt will be trying to close the gap between Gay and himself.
In six meetings, Bolt has won twice, 20.10 to Gay's 20.11 at the 2006 Jamaica Invitational and 19.99 in a photo finish at the Norwich Union in London in 2005.
Gay has already clocked 19.62 this season, which made him the second fastest man ever over the half lap distance while Bolt's 19.75 at the June 22-24 National Championships is a Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Area record.
U.S.A.'s Wallace Spearmon, the World silver medallist, who has a personal best of 19.65 from his win in Daegu last September, is also a part of the field.
Campbell, the fastest female 100m sprinter in the world this year, with her 10.89 at the Jamaican Championships in June, will face a trio of Americans - Torri Edwards, world champion Lauryn Williams and Allyson Felix.
In the women's triple jump, Jamaica's world champion Trecia Smith will take on Olympic champion and Russia's 2001 and 2003 world triple jump gold medallist Tatyana Lebedeva.
Kenia Sinclair again will face-off with Maria Mutola, three-time World outdoor 800m champion, in the women's 800m.
