UK claiming Bob Marley?
published: Thursday | June 7, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

What do you think of the suggestion that Bob Marley be taught in British history in British schools, as part of the attempts to build a multi-cultural society? This has been suggested in an article in the Times Educational Supplement, dated May 25, 2007.

If he is presented as Jamaican, this could be an honour for Jamaica. While others may be able to claim him, Bob Marley got his grooming and springboard in Jamaica. As such, any attempt to rely on this 20th century icon, should highlight his Jamaican roots.

Similarly, The Independent newspaper produced a four-page spread on Bob Marley on Friday, June 1, 2007. They explain that the assassination attempt on Marley in Kingston led him to take refuge in London. There, he found a unique mix of circumstances including the social stimulation and the technology readily available, that led to him writing and recording EXODUS.

Could new claims to Bob Marley simply be linked to the fact that EXODUS has been voted the TIME Magazine album of the century?

Let credit be given where it is due. The quality of his output should be ascribed to the place that groomed him - Jamaica.

I am, etc.,
