Campbell ... ran 10.91 in California. - file
DESPITE HER second-place finish behind American Tori Edwards, Jamaican Olympic champion Veronica Campbell had the best performance by any Jamaican sportsperson over the past week.
Campbell's second-place effort could also be considered as the best Caribbean performance at the adidas Track Classic held at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, last Sunday.
Following a disappointing start to her 2006 season in which she lost twice in her specialty event to compatriot Sherone Simpson, Campbell, who was running her second 100m in almost a year, blazed the track with an impressive 10.91 seconds behind Edwards (10.90).
It was with this performance that Campbell, who won the 2006 edition in 10.99 seconds to defend her 100m dash title, was voted The Gleaner Performer of the Week.
Earlier, Campbell, who helped Jamaica to the sprint relay gold at the Athens Olympic, won her first 100m at the Jamaica International Invitational in a then world-leading 11.07 seconds.
In what is expected to be a competitive 100m field at the National Championships, Campbell, who missed the second half of last season, seems to be nearing top form.
