Showdown on court to decide titles
published: Saturday | May 26, 2007

Robert Bailey, Freelance Writer

The stage is set for a big showdown today when unbeaten Molynes United A and Alpha square off in the final of the Jamaica Netball Association (JNA) Supreme Ventures A League at the Leila Robinson Courts, starting at 4:30 p.m.

Another title will be on the line and prior to that decider, Friendship and Jetsetters C will meet in the Western Union C League final, starting at 3:00 p.m.

Molynes United booked their place in the final following a 51-40 victory over Hampshire A in the semis.

Alpha secured their place after beating Ebony Strikers 32-31.

Dwight Sutherland, assistant manager/coach of Alpha, believes his team can take the title.

"I am fairly confident. We are playing against a good team because we played against them earlier in the season and it ended in a draw," said Sutherland.

Counter plan

He added: "I know that they have a very good shooter who played for Jamaica on the Under-16 team last year, but even with this I know how they play and we are working on certain things to counter their style of play."

Alpha will be depending mainly on former national Under-16 representative and goal attack, Vanessa Walker, centre and captain Dacia Barnes and goalkeeper Anna-Kay Morris, all of whom have played a pivotal part in their team's success this season.

Roy Price, the coach of Molynes United, expressed optimism, but with some degree of caution.

"We are confident of a victory, but we are also very cautious because this is a final and any team can win on the day and Alpha is a good team," said Price.

"We are going to play the game and see what happens, we are hoping to come out victorious on the day."

Former national Under-16 player and the league's leading goal shooter, Christina Salmon, will lead the Molynes United attack, along with goal attack Odette Harris, wing attack Shakiera Williams and goalkeeper Monique Blake.
