The Editor, Sir:With reference to the nine-year-old girl with aplastic anemia, my daughter was afflicted with a similar problem 21 years ago. We thought that we would lose her.
She was admitted to Bustamante Children's Hospital in Kingston and the doctor said that there was no hope for her.
I am a nurse and I used my networking skills and found a doctor at State University of New York in Brooklyn, N.Y.
She had a difficult time, such as getting blood transfusions every two weeks to stay alive, and eventually the doctor gave her a drug called Anti Thymocytic Globulin. Thank God! It is now 22 years, and she has never been sick.
They do not know what caused this, but she is now the mother of two beautiful girls. Please convey this message of hope to that mom.
I was there and I know what she is experiencing. The doctor's name is Scott Miller, professor of pediatric hematology at Downstate University, SUNY, Brooklyn, N.Y.
I am, etc.,
