The Independent Jamaican Council for Human Rights will host its sixth annual general meeting today.
The council has, over the 39 years of its existence, sought to protect and promote the human rights of all persons in Jamaica. Through its programmes in the areas of human rights education, advocacy and constitutional and legal reform, the council has worked arduously to support the humane treatment of citizens and promote respect for the dignity of everyone.
Highlights
Among the achievements in the past year, the council will be highlighting the establishment of a branch office in Montego Bay, St. James. This office was opened in October last year.
Gillian Burgess, attorney-at-law, is the legal officer at the office. This accomplishment, it is hoped, will strengthen the council's ability to serve Jamaicans in the protection and promotion of their rights.
The annual general meeting will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the Norman Manley Law School with a session open to all members of the public.
