WALNUT, California (CMC):

Jamaican Korene Hinds won the women's invitational 3,000-metre steeplechase at the 48th Mount San Antonio College (SAC) Relays at the Hilmer Lodge Stadium on Friday night.

Hinds clocked nine minutes 39.94 seconds to win the event ahead of Americans Carrie Messner and Lindsey Anderson.

Dominant throughout the event, Hinds, who finished fourth in the event at the 2005 IAAF World Championship in Helsinki, won by more than five seconds over Messner (9:45.18), with Anderson third in 9:46.00.

Jamaican Madrea Hyman was fourth in 9:56.05.

In the highlight of Friday evening's session, Shalane Flanagan clocked a US record and world-leading 14 minutes 40.80 seconds for he women's 5,000 metres.

The men's steeplechase went to Kenyan David Cheromei in 8:34.78, the Kenyan accelerating away from Michael Spence (8:37.95) as they approached the homestretch.
