Bellefield's Campbell planned for record
published: Saturday | March 31, 2007

Campbell

Bellefield High cannot win Champs, but distance runner Kemoy Campbell is determined to put them on the map.

Campbell was in fine form on yesterday's third day of the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys & Girls Athletics Championships, destroying the field to win the boys' Class Two 1500m in a record 3:58.06 seconds.

He crossed the line about 30 metres ahead of the field.

Though he raced alone from start to finish, Campbell described the race as 'difficult'.

"It was difficult but I put my mind to it and ran what I think my body could handle," he explained. "I planned to break the record from in the heats and I planned to break it in the final again," he added.

Erased previous record

Campbell had earlier clocked 4:01.02 in the heat to erase the previous record.

"I wanted to run 3:55 but I did 3:38 and I am happy for that," he noted.

The Kingston College (KC) pair of Donohue Williams, who won last year's event in a record 4:02.50, was second in 4:07.56 and Andria Bonner (4:11.11) third.

Campbell went on to explain his domination.

"I think I have more guts than them ... and I am very dedicated to do well."

He will now switch his focus to the 5000m, which will be run today.

"I am trying to break the record also ... The record is 14:45.05," he said.

As for the rest of the season, Campbell said: "I am going to keep training hard and I plan to go to CARIFTA Games and win two gold medals, I don't want any silver again."
