On a day when St. Jago High's Yohan Blake brought down the house with a sensational boys' Class One 100-metre win over two-time defending champion Remaldo Rose of Camperdown, Kingston College's (KC) Kerion Stewart and Holmwood's Taneisha Blair established national junior records to complete major highlights on yesterday's third day of the 2007 ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls Athletics Championships at the National Stadium.

The day ended with Calabar and Holmwood looking good for title honours, with the latter schol's Blair hurling the javelin 47.85 metres for her third consecutive title, while erasing the national record of 47.49m and the Champs mark of 46.62. Blair held both records.

Impressive run

Stewart'simpressive run of 13.69 seconds in the Class One boys 110m hurdles, bettered his own national record of 13.71 and the Champs record of 13.79, previously held by former Calabar athlete Dwight Thomas.

Stewart also won the boys' 400m hurdles in 51.42 ahead of his teammate, Andre Peart (52.48), who ended third.

In the long-anticipated clash, Blake defeated Rose to spark wild celebrations among his schoolmates.

Blake, who won the Class One boys' event in a record 10.21 seconds, said he was "a little nervous at the start, but I went out and did what my coach said and was victorious".

He added: "The record means a lot to me because that was my aim for Champs."

Former St. George's College runner Tesfa Latty set the previous leading mark, 10.24, in 2003.

Rose, who was second in 10.43 seconds, said he is not too disappointed.

"Not really, because I am injured," he said.

Holmwood's Schillonie Calvert won the girls' Class One event in 11.38 seconds ahead of her teammate, Anastasia Le-Roy (11.41).

Other Winners

Other 100m boys champions were Dexter Lee of Herbert Morrison (10.41 - Class 2); Munro's Rolando Reid ( 11.05 - Class 3); and girls - Danielle Jeffrey of Immaculate (11.64 - Class 2); Antonique Campbell of Herbert Morrison (11.89 - Class 3); Cardene Copeland of Wolmer's (12.11 - Class 4).

Calabar's Ramone McKenzie secured his second record of the meet, yesterday, running 47.30 to erase former JC runner Edward Clarke's six-year-old mark of 47.49. Michael Clarke, who now coaches McKenzie at Calabar, was the man in charge of Clarke at JC.
