Today has been designated Jockeys' Guild Day at Caymanas Park, the 10-race programme paying homage to jockeys past and present.
Among the trophy races are the Brian Harding Trophy over 1820 metres in honour of the reigning champion jockey, the George HoSang Trophy honouring the legendary four-time champion and the CTL Exercise Riders race over 800 metres straight for $160,000 claimers, to be run in two divisions.
The card also features the Al Gopie Memorial Cup to be contested by maiden four-year-olds and up over the straight five course. A popular lightweight jockey, Gopie, was killed in a spill at Caymanas Park on Saturday, November 20, 1999, in the day's penultimate race.
The quartet
The race in his memory has attracted 14 starters and indications are it will come down to the quartet of WE WILL SEE, SASSY SUSAN, FLAME OF VICTORY and LADY RAJKUMARI who is best drawn at post position 14 on the stands' side.
Victory will more than likely go to the Allan 'Billy' Williams-trained WE WILL SEE, a lightly raced four-year-old gelding by Market Rally out of French Mistress. He was all the rage on his February 7, debut over 1200 metres, but failed to justify the support, finishing 2-1/2 lengths third to SAMBA DANCER and OK BABY.
However, he will have gained from the experience and is poised to recoup losses with his opponents nothing much.
Elsewhere on the programme, the George HoSang Trophy overnight allowance race over the straight five course has attracted a competitive field of 10, headed by the profound course specialist DOUBLE BOW, to be ridden by 3.0kg claiming apprentice Jason Simpson for trainer Donovan Bruce.
DOUBLE BOW left us with good form last December when finishing a close third to CHARMING LUTHER over 1100 metres in open allowance company.
Although lightly trained as usual, the speedy five-year-old gelding by Law Of The Sea out of Tropical Fling reports in good condition.
Now stepping down in class to vie for this trophy, he will only go down fighting, but preference is for another speedy type, BULLET TRAIN, who has not only worked well in preparation for this race, but is best drawn on the outside at post position 10.
From the stables of champion trainer Wayne DaCosta, BULLET TRAIN proved competitive in his last two races, the more recent on March 3 when leading for over 800 metres in the 1100-metre race won by NASATOL.
Back in action from the convenient mark of 53.0kg and in-form apprentice Andre Martin aboard, BULLET TRAIN should win from DOUBLE BOW, knocking at the door are COMMANDING LIGHT and CLASSY BOY PETE, who reports well prepared.
I also like DEARDREAMER to make all in the third race, derby winner RANSOM MAN to rebound in the fourth, the well-trained YAHABIBI in the sixth and AMERICAN DON over SHINING SUN and BAILAME in the Jamaica Jockeys' Guild Trophy race.
