Naggo Head capitalise on Waterhouse's generosity
published: Tuesday | March 20, 2007

Howard Walker, Staff Reporter

Waterhouse had their second Fan Appreciation Day on Sunday, giving away everything at their disposal including their Wray and Nephew National Premier League (NPL) game against Naggo Head.

Admission was free and all the major sponsors had booths, promotions, prizes and surprises at the mini-stadium as fans revelled in the occasion.

Visitors Naggo Head, rooted to the bottom of the league, capitalised on the hosts' generosity to secure their third win of the season, courtesy of a 31st-minute strike from Andrew Bravo.

Naggo Head, the relegation favourites, battled hard and truly deserved their victory though they spoiled the party for the home team.

However, they remain at the bottom on 12 points, six behind Wadadah but 16 behind third from bottom Seba on 28 points.

Propelled Waterhouse

Naggo Head's coach, Wayne Fairclough, who propelled Waterhouse to their famous title-chasing championship run last season, is on another mission. This time at the other end of the table with the relegation threatened Naggo Head.

Fairclough, who took over the reins before the start of the year, remains optimistic he can save the Portmore-based team from the drop.

"Never say die. It's a hard tussle but we still need to win some games. We need to win seven games out of a possible 11 and this is one and I am thankful for it," said Fairclough.

Waterhouse threw everything in the kitchen, including the sink, at Naggo Head but Fairclough never panicked. He instead went on the offensive to thwart their challenge and brought on three attacking players.

"The best form of defence is attack. We have been playing all season and not scoring goals, that had hampered us. But today we played a tactical game and they stood up, delivered and I am happy. I am a proud man today," added Fairclough.

The Waterhouse Fan Appreciation Day started at 3:00 p.m. and saw their Under-21s thrashing Naggo Head 4-1 with Gervan Brown scoring three times in the 35th, 85th and 89th minutes. He was ably supported by Ricardo Morris with a 79th- minute goal.

Bridgeport High schoolboyAndre Clennon, who was the MVP in the Manning Cup, replied for Naggo Head in the 50th minute.

By approximately 8:30 p.m., the party was finished and gloom settled over the mini-stadium as Waterhouse succumbed to their fourth defeat of the season.

The defending champions remain on 42 points in fourth position, 11 behind leaders Harbour View.

Coach Andrew Williams is adamant his team's chances of defending its title is not slipping away.

"No, I wouldn't say that. Nine games to go. I wouldn't say that. It's a confidence thing and I am hoping that once we get the first win we can build a momentum and go forward," Williams told The Gleaner.

"We are disappointed but I see some good signs that I can work with. I have to minimise and try my best. I only had one centre forward available to us. So we'll have to work and capitalised with what we have," added Williams.
