Arnett Gardens Football Club's top marksman, Leon Strickland, scored his 11th goal of the season on Sunday as the 'Junglists' beat Reno FC 1-0 in the Wray and Nephew National Premier League match at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex. Strickland's goal, netted in the 34th minute, snapped a six-game losing streak in all competitions - four NPL, including a 4-0 drubbing by league leaders Harbour View on March 11. Arnett Gardens remained sixth with 33 points, while Reno (45) lost ground on leaders Harbour View which are on 53 points. Winning coach Glendon 'Admiral' Bailey was relieved with the win.
Nice feeling to win
"After losing for so long, it's a nice feeling to finally win a game. The players showed a lot of guts and I am happy with the win," Bailey explained. Reno dominated the early stages of the game. However, faulty shooting let them down. The two easiest chances came in the 25th minute when Martin Williams shot wide from inside the six-yard box as he met a right-sided cross from Nicholi Findlayson, then in the 82nd- minute goal poucher Kirk Wright muffed a chance from point blank range, hitting the right upright with his effort.
Arnett Gardens played a good second half asStrickland, Everton Bunsie, Kwame Richardson and Cornel Chin-Sue ran at the Reno defence. In one of these runs, Strickland struck the post from just outside the 18-yard box and later Kwame Richardson forced his way inside the box but kicked straight at goalkeeper Dwayne Kerr. In the dying moments of the game Arnett Gardens had to hold on as Reno pushed all their players upfront in a last ditch effort to salvage a point, but that was not to be as the Junglists ground out a gritty win.
Reno's coach Wendell Downswell was not a happy man.
"We cannot be missing goals like these," Downswell said of the numerous scoring opportunities his strikers botched.
He continued: "We only have ourselves to blame, we domina-ted the game and keep missing goals."
