All hail the FANS
published: Tuesday | March 20, 2007

It was another full house at Sabina Park yesterday when the West Indies faced Zimbabwe. The cricket fans, many dressed in the colours of the Jamaican flag, started to trickle into the newly-refurbished venue from as early as 8:00 a.m. The food, music and drinks started to flow soon after.

Throughout the match, the fans across the different stands did all they could to cheer their favourite players on. From a paltry attempt at the Mexican wave early on, to dancing and screaming at the top of their lungs, the fans from across the country and, indeed, the world were a huge part of the experience. A small but gutsy group of Zimbabwean supporters made their presence felt in the north stand by waving flags and screaming the names of the members of that team, while the party stand was filled with Caribbean nationals with a love of good food and loud music. The huge speaker boxes positioned in that stand kept the entire ground entertained between overs.

Hats with fake dreadlocks attached were a big seller among men at the souvenir stand, while the women favoured maroon-coloured blouses and skimpy shorts. Lines at the food counters continued to be long and moved slowly, but this didn't seem to dampen the spirits of the thousands of cricket fans. They jumped and cheered even when there was a lull in the action on the field and this made for an atmosphere filled with excitement and jubilation throughout the day.
