published: Tuesday | March 6, 2007

PARAMARIBO, Suriname (CMC):

Government has appointed John von Niesewand as the country's Chief Justice, seven years after the last holder of the post left the job.

President Ronald Venetiaan on Friday swore in von Niesewand who has been acting as court president.

"The appointment of a president has been the subject of heated debates, disputes and even protest demonstrations," said Venetiaan, noting that filling such sensitive positions can be difficult.

PARAMARIBO, Suriname (CMC):

Parliament Friday approved a US$817 million budget, despite sharp criticism from the Oppositionbenches.

The budget debate which started early December 2006 was marred by controversy and several delays, setting back approval of the national budget by months.

Government expects income of US$585 million, while expenditure will be about US$817 million - a deficit of US$232 million.
