Scotland looking to create a 'shock'
published: Wednesday | February 28, 2007

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC):

Scotland has brought a string of all-rounders to the Caribbean in an effort to make positive strides in the upcoming Cricket World Cup.

Speaking after the team's arrival here Monday, captain Craig Wright said he believed these players could help his team shock one of the big teams in the preliminary-round phase.

"We want to challenge South Africa and Australia and take it as it comes. We have a number of smart players who can do the job for us. I am really believing we can cause a shock," said medium-pacer Wright who averages 20.6 with the ball from his 13 one-day appearances.

The team's leading players are seam bowling all-rounder Dougie Brown and batting all-rounder Gavin Hamilton. Both have played at the international level for England.

The team will also be looking to seamer John Blain, batters Ryan Watson and Majid Haq, and Navdeep Poonia.

Want to show mettle

"We want to show Scotland is a good cricket team and we want to show our mettle by playing good, hard cricket. We want to play as well as we can and strive to improve and see what happens," Wright continued.

"Getting to the second round would be a major story. We are a strong all-round team. We have depth in our batting and our bowling has been good. We have a couple spinners who can make things happen and our fielding has been brilliant in the recent matches in Kenya."

Scotland will play official CWC warm-up matches in Barbados against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh at the 3Ws Oval, starting Monday.
