SEVERAL FORMER former West Indies stars are expected to relive their glory days when they face a Jamaica Invitational XI at the Trelawny Multi-purpose Stadium today.
The match is part of a weekend of cricket dubbed 'Jamaica Cricket Festival of Stars' in western Jamaica.
Among the stars slated to appear are former West Indies captain Richie Richardson and fast bowlers Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh. The trio will turn out for the Lashings World XI against a Jamaica Invitational team.
Walsh played 132 Test matches and took 519 wickets, while Ambrose took 405 wickets from 98 Test matches.
Ambrose played 176 one-day internationals for 225 wickets, while Walsh had 227 wickets from 205 matches.
Richardson made 5,949 runs in 86 Test matches while his 224 ODI matches brought him 6,248 runs.
Former Pakistan wicketkeeper/batsman Rashid Latif, Zimbabwe's Grant Flower and Sri Lanka's Aravinda da Silva are also expected to grace the Lashings line-up.
As for the Jamaica Invitational team, Guyana's Esuan Crandon and Nevisian teenage sensation Keiran Powell will join West Indies players David Bernard Jr., Carlton Baugh Jr., Jermaine Lawson and Donovan Pagon.
Sixteen-year-old Powell was invited based on his exploits in the Stanford Twenty20 competition which entertained fans across the Caribbean.
Crandon, who also shone brightly during that tournament, is remembered as the man who knocked Jamaica out of the competition.
Taking match seriously
Jamaica's coach, Junior Bennett, said, despite the 'friendly' tag, they will be taking the match seriously.
"We are treating the match very serious," Bennett said. "When you look at the Lashings team they are still playing competitive cricket," he said.
"We are treating this match serious so I hope the guys will go out and play well."
He said he anticipates a competitive game of cricket.
"With the exception of Crandon and Powell, the rest of the players are vying for a place on Jamaica's team, so players will be looking to impress the selectors," he said.
