LETTER OF THE DAY - Parent-teachers' association saddened by loss of life
published: Sunday | December 3, 2006

From left, Education Minister Maxine Henry-Wilson, Ruddy Spencer, Member of Parliament, SE Clarendon, and Dr. Henrietta Stewart, principal of Vere Technical High School in Hayes, Clarendon, touring a new block in August. Five male students were shot at the scholl last week.

The Editor, Sir:

The National Parent-Teachers' Association of Jamaica (NPTAJ) notes with despair recent incidents involving students that have caused loss of life and serious injury to some.

Students have been killed by speeding motor vehicles on our roads. Now we see where they have been shot and injured by the very security guards that have been hired to keep them safe.

The NPTAJ condemns these incidents which attacks the future of the nation - our children.

The recent incident at Vere Technical High School is of great concern to us as not only does it show how our children are exposed to danger while at school, but also how they react in such a situation.

While we understand their shock and anger at the event which unfolded, we cannot condone their response. As future leaders, one would have hoped that their actions would have been controlled and measured rather than reflecting what is happening in the society. Parents and guardians, please be reminded that children live what they learn. They emulate our behaviour and therefore, our behaviour must be worthy of such.

Sympathy to the parents

The NPTAJ wishes to express our sympathy to the parents who have lost children due to violence and accidents and we pray for a speedy recovery for those injured at Vere.

We are calling on the Ministry of Education to enact with a sense of urgency the appropriate policy that will ensure that such an incident does not reoccur. The NPTAJ stands willing and ready to participate in all discussions required to frame this policy as the input of parents will be vital.

Finally, we ask that the teachers continue to support and guide the children in their daily activities. You are the parents in our absence and although they are great in numbers, we are confident that you will look out for each one.

I am, etc.,

SYLVESTER E. ANDERSON

President
