Strong JDF march over Maverley
published: Sunday | November 19, 2006

Robert Bailey, Freelance Writer

THE JAMAICA Defence Force (JDF) continued their unbeaten run in the JN/KSAFA Super League with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Maverley at Up Park Camp yesterday. Meanwhile, Santos drew 1-1 with Greenwich Town at the Bell-Chung Oval.

The JDF dominated the first half but failed to convert numerous clear scoring chances presented to them by a weak Maverley defensive unit.

Floyd Robinson, Oneil Spence and Damion Brown were guilty of missing sitters while Maverley's best chances fell to Macro Beckford but his close-range shot was spectacularly saved by former national player Allien Whittaker at full stretch to his left.

JDF dominate

In the second half JDF continued to dominate and were finally rewarded in the 78th minute when Spence volleyed home a spectacular left-foot, close-range shot courtesy of a well-placed cross from teammate Mario Gordon.

Brown put the issue beyond doubt in the 82nd minute as he fired home a powerful right-foot shot from point-blank range to give the Soldiers their third win from as many starts.

The coach of JDF, Owen Nelson, was happy with his team's performance.

Anxiety

"I think we should gave scored earlier in the game but I must admit my players definitely let anxiety get the better of them in the first half but, nonetheless, I am happy for the three points" Nelson said. Meanwhile, Maverley assistant coach Norman Angus was disappointed with his team's effort.

"We could have done much better today but the players just didn't play any football," Angus said. "We lost our concentration in the last 15 minutes of the game ... we have to go back to the drawing board and prepare for our next game," he said.

In other games it was: Cavalier 1 Duhaney Park 1 and Police 3 Barbican 0.
