Victoria Jubilee Hospital in downtown Kingston. - Andrew Smith /Photography Editor
The Editor, Sir:
A few weeks ago it was reported that conditions at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) were sub-standard, but I had no idea how bad things were there.
However, a relative of mine is now a patient at the hospital and so I have been visiting the facility frequently over the last three weeks. The conditions that I have observed have caused me great concern.
I was appalled to learn that there is no X-ray or scanning machine there, and that those at the U.C. hospital hardly work. I am told that when patients require these treatments, they have to find the money up front to get it done at one of the many small, but more efficient private institutions.
Great media opportunity
I think that the media squandered a great opportunity when the news broke at the Victoria Jubilee Hospital recently. Instead of following up on a story which is of great importance to the nation, everyone seemed more focused on the Trafigura affair.
The situation at Jamaica's public hospitals is a national disgrace. In my view, K.P.H. is the most important hospital in Jamaica.
