Gunners in early season crawl
published: Monday | September 11, 2006

ARSENAL 1 MIDDLESBROUGH 1

Arsenal have suffered their worst start for 15 years after being held to a 1-1 draw at the new Emirates Stadium for the second game in succession. James Morrison gave Middlesbrough - beaten 7-0 at Arsenal last season - the lead but Arsenal came from behind to claim a point from the penalty spot. Middlesbrough were down to 10 men after George Boateng had been sent off when Thierry Henry scored from the spot after Emanuel Eboue had been fouled.

GOALS-ARSENAL: HENRY PEN 67; MIDDLESBROUGH: MORRISON 22.

BOLTON 1, WATFORD 0

Gary Speed scored an injury-time penalty to give Bolton a victory they did not deserve. Bolton gave a debut to Nicolas Anelka and though he had a quiet start Watford are still waiting for their first Premiership win and were denied three times by the woodwork. Their hard work was finally undone when the veteran Speed scored from the spot after Watford defender Danny Shittu had fouled Bolton substitute Idan Tal.

GOAL-BOLTON: SPEED PEN 90.

CHELSEA 2, CHARLTON 1

Chelsea recorded their ninth successive victory at Stamford Bridge and condemned Charlton to their worst ever start to a Premier League campaign. Didier Drogba gave the champions the lead early in the game but former Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink levelled with an intelligent left-foot shot. But a header from Portuguese defender Ricardo Carvalho confirmed the points for Chelsea. They could even afford the luxury of Frank Lampard's late penalty miss.

GOALS-CHELSEA: DROGBA 6, CARVALHO 63; CHARLTON: HASSELBAINK 54.

EVERTON 3, LIVERPOOL 0

Everton's impressive start to the season continued in emphatic style in the 204th Merseyside derby. Tim Cahill gave Everton the lead with a close-range finish before Andrew Johnson added Everton's second 12 minutes later, taking advantage of Jamie Carragher's. Liverpool wasted a succession of chances before keeper Pepe Reina fumbled Lee Carsley's shot for Johnson to head home in added time.

GOALS-EVERTON: CAHILL 24, JOHNSON 36, 90.

UNITED 1, TOTTENHAM 0

Ryan Giggs's early goal was enough to earn Manchester United their fourth straight win - their best ever start to a Premiership season. The Welshman swooped to head in off the bar after Paul Robinson could only parry Cristiano Ronaldo's swerving free-kick. United included former Spurs favourite Michael Carrick but Michael Dawson, Jermain Defoe and Mido all wasted good chances for Spurs to seal what would have been a deserved draw.

GOAL-MAN UTD: GIGGS 9.

NEWCASTLE 1, FULHAM 2

Fulham scored two late goals to secure an unlikely win but the victory was tempered slightly by the sight of Jimmy Bullard leaving on a stretcher with a serious knee injury. Both Fulham's goals came from their Americans, with Brian McBride steering a shot past Shay Given to convert Wayne Routledge's cross and then substitute Carlos Bocanegra scored from close range after McBride's header hit the bar following a Fulham corner. Newcastle were cruising through a Scott Parker header.

GOALS-NEWCASTLE: PARKER 54; FULHAM: McBRIDE 82, BOCANEGRA 89.

PORTSMOUTH 1, WIGAN 0

Portsmouth went top of the Premiership for two hours when they continued their impressive start. They remain the only team yet to concede a goal and secured their latest vistory thanks to Benjani Mwaruwari's clever finish early in the second half of a hard-fought game in which Wigan were unlikely not to take a point. It was Benjani's first ever goal at Fratton Park in 11 attempts since arriving as the club's record signing.

GOAL-BENJANI 49.

SHEFFIELD 0, BLACKBURN 0

No goals but plenty of action at Bramall Lane where three penalties were awarded - and all three were saved. First Blackburn's Lucas Neill saw his penalty saved by Paddy Kenny after Benni McCarthy had been fouled. Then Blackburn's Brad Friedel saved, firstly fron David Unsworth and then again, from Rob Hulse. It was an astonishing end to what had been a lacklustre affair up until the end.

NO GOALS.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 10

WEST HAM 1, ASTON 1

Carlos Tevez came off the bench to make his West Ham debut, but it was Bobby Zamora who earned West Ham a point. Liam Ridgewell gave Villa an early lead after Juan Pablo Angel's header was parried. Angel also hit the bar twice with headers. But Zamora deflected Paul Konchesky's header past Thomas Sorensen after the break to earn a point for West Ham and before the end Argentina World Cup star Tevez acame on for his debut, with compatriot Javier Mascherano settling for a place on the bench.

GOALS-WEST HAM: ZAMORA 52; VILLA: RIDGEWELL 4.
