Windalco edge St Ann to retain men's title
published: Monday | September 11, 2006

Windalco's men are still inter-bauxite table tennis champions, as they clipped St. Ann Bauxite 3-2 in the final played at the Alpart Sports Club on Saturday to retain the title, after St. Ann Bauxite had beaten them twice by 3-2 score lines in the home-and-away section of the competition.

St. Ann Bauxite won the first two matches, as Richard Thomas crushed Wayne Aird 11-7, 11-4, 11-7 (3-0) in the first and Andrew Lawrence trounced Justin Allen 11-7, 11-7, 11-7 (3 - 0) in the second.

The draw, which was in Windalco's favour this time, helped the winners to turn the tables. Windalco's top player George Hyman drew St. Ann Bauxite's top player Wavel Williams and beat him 11-7, 9-11, 11-5, 11-8 (3 -1) to take the score to 2-1. Mark Gregory won the fourth for Windalco, outlasting Oral Brown 11-7, 11-8, 10-12, 8-11, 11-6 (3 -2) to make the score 2 - 2, and in the fifth and deciding match, Marlon Ranger brushed aside Courtney Dunkley 11-6, 11-7, 11-9 (3 - 0), to win the match for Windalco.

Meanwhile St. Ann Bauxite's Wavel Williams and Andrea Wadsworth of Windalco are the men's and women's singles champions respectively.

First int'l single

Williams won his first inter-bauxite singles title while defending champion Wadsworth has always been the women's singles champion. The men's singles final was an all St. Ann Bauxite affair as Williams and Andrew Lawrence knocked out Windalco's top players - former champion George Hyman and defending champion Mark Gregory respectively - in the semi-finals.

In the men's final, Williams outplayed his teammate Lawrence 11-6, 11-9, 11-5, 5-11, 8-11, 11-8 (4-2) in the best-of-seven matches, to take the title. In the semi-finals Williams ousted Hyman 16-14, 12-10, 6-11, 14-12 (3-1) while Lawrence came from behind to pip Gregory 9-11, 7-11, 11-9, 13-11, 11-9 (3 -2).

A round-robin format was used in the three-player women's singles play-off. Wadsworth overpowered teammate Elaine Jarrett 11-9, 11-1, 11-9 (3-0) and Kerrida Royal of St. Ann Bauxite 11-3, 11-2, 11-1 (3-0) to retain the title. Jarrett stopped Royal 11-3, 11-3 11-2 (3-0) for the runner-up spot.
