Seba surprise Portmore
published: Monday | September 11, 2006

Howard Walker, Staff Reporter

Maxwell

Seba turned in an efficient performance blanking Portmore United 2-0 in their Wray and Nephew National Premier League game at the Ferdie Neita Park yesterday.

Goals by Kemar James in the 28th and substitute Delroy Ellis in the 71st gave the Montego Bay-based outfit maximum points.

James opened the scoring in the 28th minute scrambling home a left -sided cross after goalkeeper Shawn Sawyers failed to gather properly.

The writing was on the wall before Delroy Ellis volleyed home from close range after an enterprising run from Miller down the right flank sealed the points.

Winning coach Jeffrey Maxwell said it was a good start because his team had trained hard in the last couple of weeks.

"We felt that if we could come here and get three points it would have been a very good start. We have defeated one of the better teams in the league but there is a long way to go," said Maxwell.

Meanwhile, Horace Reid, coach of Portmore said his team "didn't play well and tactically we were very poor."

CONGRATS

"We could have lost the game by more than two. Congrats to Seba they looked more competitive," added Reid.

The red and green-clad Seba under new coach Maxwell dominated from start to finish and could have won by a wider margin, exposing the frailties in Portmore's defence time and time again.

Home team Portmore, missing Kevin Deerr, Jameel and Wolry Wolfe and Ryan Powell looked tepid, giving the home fans nothing much to cheer about.

EXPERIENCE

Their backline, missing the experienced Anthony Modeste — who it is said has returned to Grenada and won't be playing in Jamaica anymore — was badly exposed. Demar Stewart and Adrian Reid had their hands full trying to contain a Seba team which utilised the basic one-two very effectively.

Seba, the 1997 champion, took charge early and the likes of captain Damian Williams, Glenroy Miller, Wifred Smith, Kemar James, Keniel Moodie, Iton Scott and Norman Woolery, proved too much for Portmore.

In the Under-21 encounter, Portmore defeated Seba 2-1 courtesy of goals from Richard Orett (48th) and Bryan Bayliss (89th). Shanoy Anderson pulled one back in the 94th minute for Seba.
