Garrisons want change
published: Monday | September 11, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

I write in agreement with what was written in your paper dated September 8, 2006 - The people want more than hugs and kisses. The people of all garrison communities are sick and tired of living in that unlivable situation.

The people are longing for a change for the better. Outside toilets are a thing of the past but yet in the prime minister's constituency, it is the norm to not have proper running water, garbage everywhere, zinc shacks as houses which contain many family living on the edge dying for a relief.

Gang violence, shootings everyday, it becomes so regular children live in that way for years. If you think I am lying, check out Maxfield Avenue and every adjoining street in that part of the prime minister's constituency. It is recorded as one of the worst places to even pass through.

We want to know what are the plans for that specific area; what is going to happen to the boys and girls around there and the entire country which is so vulnerable. What about crime and violence? How do you plan to deal with extortion, rape and other major crimes that are killing the soul of our country.? Whatever your plans are, we need to know.

For years no government has done anything to deal with the situation. Until they do something the country will continue to under-perform and be overlooked and overcome by the negatives. We are dying to see the Jamaica that was the jewel of the Caribbean.

I am, etc.,
