LETTER OF THE DAY - Watching the PM in Gordon House 'hot seat'
published: Monday | September 11, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

I watched with my mouth wide open at the TV news reports of the happenings in the House of Representatives last Tuesday.

These are gentlemen and ladies with no respect for each other. Our Prime Minister must now realise that she will be constantly sitting in the 'hot seat' and must be able at all times to answer queries put to her. She is only one human being, but she is the person in charge and the buck stops with her. She should, therefore, endeavour at all times to be up to date on all the details of the various ministries and I would imagine that at each Cabinet meeting she would receive an overview on all matters.

What she needs to do is to have an efficient personal assistant who collates all the information and then briefs the Prime Minister. If she does this she should never be on the carpet as she was last Tuesday.

The Opposition members must have thought that they have really scored points during this very silly season of electioneering, but in my books they failed. I think all of us in this country would like to ascertain that all the points made by Messrs. Golding, Samuda etc. are true.

Now that it is electioneering season we must all examine the promises made by both sides. I would like to find out from the Opposition where the funds are going to come from to provide free education to secondary level. Michael Manley tried it once and had to revert to payments by parents. John Public needs to know how are you going to fund free education, no charge for books etc.

John Public would also like to know how you are going to fund the increases of 50 per cent to staff of hospitals, schools, police, teachers, civil servants. This is very important for us to know to help us make up our minds.

Can I also ask all the citizens of Jamaica to make notes of all the promises now being made and to also have the strength to stand up in public meetings and ask the various speakers to verify any promise that seems impossible and any slander that cannot be proven.

I am, etc.,

BARBARA COVER
