Physicians honour two doctors

It was an evening of whit, charm and humour at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel, New Kingston, on Saturday where almost 100 doctors gathered to honour two outstanding members of the medical field.

The Association of Consultant Physicians, this year honoured noted oncologist, Dr. Wycliffe Lofters, and rheumatologist, Dr. Karel De Ceulaer.

The occasion was the fourth annual symposium and banquet hosted by the association.

Dr. Lofters, a former lecturer in the Department of Pathology at the University of the West Indies (UWI), was honoured for his extensive research on breast cancer.

Rheumatology research

A professor in the Department of Oncology at Queen's University in Ontario, Canada, Dr. Lofters has written extensively on emetogenic therapy and treatment of various solid tumours.

Dr. Karel De Ceulaer was recognised for his research in rheumatology in Jamaica.

A Belgian by birth, Dr. De Ceulaer is currently a consultant rheumatologist at the University Hospital of the West Indies and lectures part-time in the Department of Medicine at the UWI.

Guest speaker Professor Franklyn Prendergast, congra-tulated the honourees on their outstanding achievements and emphasised that the intellectual capacity at the UHWI also exists in other celebrated institutions.

He also expressed a desire to work with his former colleague to further improve the facilities at the UHWI.
