Fight crime with modern technology
published: Thursday | September 7, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

We, as a people, are definitely heading in the wrong direction. Crime is out of control; the time to act is now. Desperate times call for desperate measures; not at the expense of decent law-abiding citizens, but the few bad eggs that Jamaica can definitely do without.

Most of the men and women in uniform are trying their best to confront crime in a society that questions everything they do. Every time a gunman gets killed, it's the same thing, the roads are blocked and the officers are presumed guilty. We have to fight fire with fire when it comes to dealing with murderers, thieves and rapists.

It's time for our police force to be equipped with cameras while on duty. If a picture speaks a thousand words, then a video speaks a million. It's time to fight against crime and corruption with modern technology. Most if not all police vehicles should be equipped with an onboard video camera. A camera should be present on all raids and interrogations; this would keep all parties honest. This would provide proof and positive evidence of when officers are fired upon by gunmen. This would also keep officers in check and make sure that they are doing the right thing. We owe it to our men and women in uniform to protect them while they protect us.

I am, etc.,
