Orville Hall, along with other members of the group, Dance Theater Xpressionz.
Outlook Youth André Williams caught up with Orville Hall, of Dance Theatre Xpressionz recently. This well known dancer, fresh from the Mi-phone Dancing Dynamite Competition which he co-hosted, had a few things to share with the readers:
OY: How long have you been dancing professionally?
OH: For 18 years.
OY: At what age did you find out that you could dance?
OH: From about five or six, when my older brother entered in a dancing competition.
OY: How was the experience - being a judge in the Mi-phone Dancing Dynamite Competition?
OH: It was challenging, entertaining and enjoyable.
OY: How did it all come about?
OH: Well, Jenny and myself formed the link, she is the executive producer and conceptualiser.
OY: What's new for Orville Hall?
OH: Well, presently we are thinking to set up dance classes for the general public called Dance Theatre Xpressionz.
OY: How long has Dance Theatre Xpressionz been in operation?
OH: Dance Theatre Xpressionz has been in existence for six years and consists of four females and myself.
OY: Highlight for us a few of the works you have done so far?
OH: Over 30-odd music videos, working with entertainers such as Shaggy, Ric Rock, Kartel, Richie Stephens, Jimmy Cliff and Elephant Man among others.
OY: Have you guys done any touring yet?
OH: Yes we have toured Japan, Spain, England, France and the United States.
OY: How do you find working with the dancehall artistes?
OH: It's a bit easier with the singers than with the deejays.
OY: How much of an achievement do you think Mi-phone Dancing Dynamite was to the winners, Vibez Ahatas?
OH: It was good because they learnt different genres of music and they learnt that the dance is more holistic than just dancehall.
OY: What is one of the main objectives of Dance Theatre Xpressionz?
OH: Dance Theatre Xpressionz seriously wants to show that the dancehall culture has roots. (Look at how the music evolves from Mento days to present.) It's basically to educate and re-educate. We must educate ourselves so that dancehall can't take itself away.
OY: What are some of the dance moves that you like?
OH: I am a big fan of the traditional dance.
OY: Give advice to the youths of Jamaica.
OH: Pursue dreams and know in your heart that you can. But in pursuing, get all the knowledge you can on it.
