The Public Order Act
published: Sunday | September 3, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

In view of the recent upsurge in public disorder including the malicious destruction of both government and private properties, the time has come for the Government to take a critical and urgent look at the public order law and the riot act to carry out necessary amendments to these laws and to make it relevant to the present day situation.

It will also enable the police to deal more effectively and decisively when the situation arises from time to time against those who break the law with impunity. The recent events in Summerfield has been a case in point. It also happened in St. Ann previously and to date we have not heard of any arrest. These and other events have made it compelling for the Government to move swiftly with these amendments.

To delay is dangerous, as certain sections of the society are hell-bent on taking the law into their own hands and seek to create confusion and anarchy.

The time to act is now!

I am, etc.,

ANDREW A. McCREATH
