SPRINTERS DEBBIE Ferguson and Ainsley Waugh logged Caribbean wins at the IAAF Tour Qualifying Night of Athletics meeting on Saturday night.
Bahamian Ferguson captured the women's 200 metres in 22.56 seconds and the improving Jamaican Waugh clocked 10.17 seconds to land the men's 100 metres.
Waugh sped to a good win in the men's 100 metres, chased by Nigerian Uchenna Emedolu (10.25), with Jamaican Ricardo Williams third in 10.32. Nesta Carter, a third Jamaican in the field, clocked 10.34 seconds for fifth.
Ferguson, a silver medallist at the Athens Olympics in the 200 metres two years ago, was a narrow winner of the half-lap sprint, edging local star Kim Gevaert (22.63). Grenada's Hazel-Ann Regis was fifth in 23.36 seconds.
Ferguson also raced in the 100 metres and placed fourth in 11.15 seconds with Latasha Jenkins (11.03) and Lauryn Williams (11.09) taking first and second, respectively.
BAILEY SEVENTH
Jamaican Aileen Bailey, on the comeback trail from injury, placed seventh in 11.49 seconds.
Several Caribbean Commu-nity athletes were on show at the meet and Grenada's Neisha Bernard-Thomas registered a national record in the 800 metres in posting a top-three finish.
Bernard-Thomas, winner at the Liege International on Wednesday night, clocked a personal record and Grenada all-time best two minutes 2:00.13 seconds for third in the 800 that Morocco's Mina Ait-Hammou won in 1:59.92 ahead of England's Jemma Simpson (1:59.99).
Jamaican Michael Blackwood won at the Madrid Grand Prix Monday night but had to settle for a close second here in 44.98 seconds, behind American Derrick Brew (44.96).
Blackwood's teammates Vonette Dixon and Korine Hinds appeared in the 100m hurdles and 3,000 steeplechase, respectively.
Dixon clocked 12.82 seconds for fourth in the women's sprint hurdles won by the in-form Lolo Jones in 12.56 ahead of Danielle Carruthers (12.74) and Anjanette Kirkland (12.80) in an American sweep of the top spots.
Hinds ran 9:62.72 for 11th in the steeplechase as Kenya's Jeruto Kiptum (9:26.79) won ahead of Victoria Mitchell (9:30.92).
