Windies 'A' score win over Durham
published: Monday | July 24, 2006

Tino Best

CHESTER-LE-STREET, England (CMC):

BARBADIANS TINO Best and Dwayne Smith combined for six wickets and propelled West Indies 'A' to an easy eight-wicket victory over Durham in their three-day tour match yesterday.

The West Indies reserves ripped out Durham for 148 in their second innings and then cruised to the winning target of 95 after opening batsman Devon Smith had lashed 38, including eight boundaries.

West Indies 'A' will now move on to Leicestershire for their next three-day assignment on Wednesday.

Playing without several of the regular county players including Caribbean professionals Ottis Gibson and Gareth Breese, Durham resumed at 30 for one after they trailed by 54 runs on first innings when the touring side scored 364 in response to their 310.

Pacers Best and Andrew Richardson rocked their top order and they never recovered after sinking to 35 for four.

Seam bowler Smith then moved through the middle and late order and although Graeme Bridge (43) and Garry Park (34) resisted, the home side fell just below the 150 mark.

Smith picked up three for 17 off 5.5 overs and Best grabbed three for 32 off eight overs, both collecting six-wicket match hauls, while Richardson (2-45) and left-arm spinner Dave Mohammed (1-10) completed the rout.

The left-handed Devon Smith then thumped a shot-filled 38 and West Indies also lost Sewnarine Chattergoon (20), before captain Sylvester Joseph (22) and first innings century maker Runako Morton (13) guided them to victory with an unbroken 33-run third-wicket stand.
