WALDERSTON, Manchester:
MAYOR OF Kingston, Councillor Desmond McKenzie, is calling for the establishment of a National Press Council through which Jamaicans can seek justice if they feel that they have been unfairly portrayed by the press.
Speaking at the third anniver-sary service of the central Jamaica tabloid, News Express at the Mandeville Church of God in Jamaica on yesterday, the mayor said there were no limitations on the media's right to divulge information subject only to the laws of libel.
"But we do not need the newspapers that are vulgar, and immoral and who try to sell through cheap sensationalism," the mayor said.
He said he looked forward to the day when the News Express can challenge newspapers like The Mirror in Montego Bay as well as ensure that priority is given to local problems, thereby carrying the brand of central Jamaica.
This, he said, would accompany opportunities for employment in the region and ensure that journalism students from the Northern Caribbean University could use the News Express to hone their skills.
"The local newspaper can cover news not being covered by the major media and employ persons thus helping to prevent a rural/urban drift, " Mayor McKenzie said.
