Greenidge to head WI selection committee
published: Sunday | July 16, 2006

Greenidge

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC):

BATTING LEGEND Gordon Greenidge has been appointed as the new convenor of West Indies selectors, and will be joined on the three-member panel by former Test players Andy Roberts and Clyde Butts.

Highly-placed sources in the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) confirmed the appointments which came following a meeting of the WICB directors in Barbados on Thursday.

The 55-year-old Greenidge, who served on the old panel, replaces Joey Carew who this week withdrew his nomin-ation to serve for another term.

NEW ADDITION

Butts, the former Guyanese off-spinner who played seven Tests for the West Indies, also served on the last panel but Roberts is the new addition.

Roberts, a current member of the WICB's Cricket Committee, served as a West Indies selector from 1993 to 1995.

He also served as a West Indies team manager and coach, managing the side for the 1995 home series against Australia and coaching the team to the 1996 World Cup.

As a fearsome fast bowler, he represented the West Indies in 47 Tests, taking 202 wickets.

Earlier this week, Carew indicated that after careful consideration he has decided to withdraw from the race for the new selection panel.
