Something deeper than sex
published: Sunday | July 16, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IN LIGHT of the explosion of sexual deviancy and perversion (especially attacks on our children) I think that it is time that we take the bull by the horn.

The sexual extremes that we see in the Jamaican society are a symptom of something deeper. This indeed is a hyper sexual/hyper erotic culture. We are a people who for a number of years have exalted sex to the place of divine worship and, "the fowl has come home to roost". The Biblical writer is right; you shall reap what you sow.

PORNOGRAPHY

Take for example the proliferation of pornography in our nation, despite laws that are enacted to control such. Over the past fifteen years or so, we have seen almost every light post, wall, city buildings and vehicles become a billboard for pornographic material.

Hardly can you walk through my city (Montego Bay) without being assaulted by lewd and illicit posters - mostly the bodies of women, being displayed in the most crude and vulgar posture. Not to mention the contribution of the dancehall lyrics, music videos being aired on the so-called community channel, and the controversial one, yes, the revolution in dress code.

If we are to protect and preserve the sanity of our people, especially the younger generation, we need to take a holistic approach, not just strengthening of legislation to deal with sex offenders, but let us remove the fuel from the fire.

We could start by admitting that the two statues in Emancipation Park has nothing to do with history or heritage but is a statement of sexuality more than anything else.

I am, etc.,
