THE EDITOR, Sir:
I REFER to an article on the Editorial page of your newspaper dated June 25, 2006 under the caption 'MacMillan Task Force Report: A disservice to Ja.'
Reference is made to me as stating while I was a Minister in 2001 that "the drug dealers have used their enormous wealth to reach the judiciary." I want again as I did when the article first appeared to state emphatically that I have never ever said that the judiciary was reached by drug dealers.
I had no evidence whatsoever then in 2001 and I have no evidence of that now. I made several denials then but as is so often the case it is that which is first printed that is remembered and referred to while corrections go into oblivion. I recall going on talk shows to deal with the matter because I was extremely upset when I read it.
My warning to Jamaica was the imperative for the society to become involved in the fight against drug dealers because of their propensity to use their enormous wealth to corrupt institutions which we hold dear, the judiciary, the police, the military, the political system, the customs etc.
If I had had any evidence of the judiciary being reached I would have told the Chief Justice, the police and the Parliament, none of which heard any such assertion from me.
I reiterate my confidence in the impeccable integrity of our judiciary and entreat others to share that confidence.
I am, etc.,
