Time to act now
published: Wednesday | June 28, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM a member of a leadership training organisation now called 'Junior Chamber International' formerly 'Jaycees'. I am not an active member as I have been given life membership in the form of a Senatorship.

This movement was a dynamic force in the training of young people to become leaders in their community, through charitable projects - leaders like some of our present politicians, some of our business leaders. I make bold to name just a few - Oswald Harding, MP Derrick Smith, Terrence Gillette, Desmond Leaky, Danny Williams, Derrick Gibson, Barbara Stewart and dozens more of our prominent citizens.

NATIONAL CONCERNS

The Junior Chamber movement took on national concerns and solved many of them. Today's Jamaica badly needs the resurgence of organisations like this to help in nation building. There is currently a small number of Junior Chamber chapters trying to survive. Most Jamaicans are unaware that they exist. Could all of us who have benefited from this training endeavour to make this opportunity available to our young people?

This has done wonders for Jamaica in the past and could do so now.

Most of our more senior members remember projects like Nuggets For The Needy, which won world acclaim, Meals on Wheels, Road Safety campaigns etc. Could today's Junior Chamber members rise to the needs of the country and help us to find creative work for our young minds? Communities throughout the country need this kind of help. As Junior Chamber members we recognise that we are the Government, as those elected are there to guide and direct. We must control our destiny as a people. The time to act is now.

I am, etc.,

A.GUY MORRIS
