WEST INDIES pacer Jermaine Lawson bagged five wickets to give St. Catherine the edge entering today's third and final day of their Supreme Ventures Challenge Cup final against Kingston at Kensington Park.
Lawson, bowling with pace and aggression, picked up 5-64 - his first five-wicket haul of the season, in Kingston's second innings total of 175.
Scores: Kingston 160 and 175; St. Catherine 185 and 10 without loss.
St. Catherine resumed the day on 92-4 and laboured to a 26-run first innings lead.
Dean Morgan was the first to go after he was run out after adding only seven runs to be dismissed for 38 at 101-5.
Wayne Morgan, the other overnight batsman, and Bevon Brown, 34, added 21 for the sixth wicket, but after the former went at 122, and Brown at 147-8, St. Catherine slipped to 159-9, still in search of another two runs.
However, Lawson, 25, and Damion Morgan, six, frustrated the Tigers' bowling with a 28-run last wicket stand which ensured the Saints the game's first target.
TOP ORDER ROCKED
Kingston's Andrew Richard-son claimed 3-34 from 11.5 overs and Fabian Forbes, the man who rocked St. Catherine's top order on the first evening, finished with 3-42 off 13 overs. Nehemiah Perry supported them with 2-58.
When Kingston batted a second time, apart from opener Simon Jackson's workman-like innings of 72, no Kingston batsman showed much guts or patience.
Forced to use Brian Latore to partner Jackson at the top of the order, Kingston were made to pay as with only two runs on the board, the latter gave Oniel Richards his only wicket of the innings.
Former West Indies batsman Roland Holder strolled to the crease but was quickly dismissed for 12, caught by Bevon Brown off Lawson.
Without any addition to the score (28), Jamie Trenchfield played across one from Lawson and was trapped in front.
Regular opener Duran White came out to join Jackson and the two added 77 for the fourth wicket, but after the former edged Tamar Lambert (2-15) behind, it was left to Jackson and the tail.
Perry, 23, and Kerry Scott, 10, were the other double figure scorers though Jackson was still holding firm at the other end.
Finally, it took a very good ball from Lawson to find the edge of Jackson's bat, leaving 'keeper Keith Hibbert to do the rest.
Jackson, the ninth man to be dismissed, batted intelligently and struck five fours and a five during his 183-ball knock in almost 4 1/2 hours at the crease.
Set 149 to win, St. Catherine will resume this morning on 10 without loss and only 139 runs away from their second title this season.
Danza Hyatt, two, and Dean Morgan, one, saw off 4.4 overs from West Indies A team pacer Andrew Richardson, who gave away six extra in the opening over, Fabian Forbes and Jowayne Robinson.
