Ravens A, Speg B lift netball titles
published: Sunday | May 28, 2006

Daraine Luton, Freelance Writer

RAVENS A last evening won the first Supreme Ventures A League title, while Speg B lifted the C League crown at the Leila Robinson Courts on a day that Molynes United lost both finals.

"Certainly I would have loved to win both, but getting to the finals is an achievement itself," was Molynes United's coach Roy Price utterance after the losses.

In the curtainraiser, Speg B beat Molynes United B 23-15 to clinch the Supreme Ventures C League. Later, Ravens turned in a spirited performance to beat Molynes A by two goals, winning 37-35 in the Division A final.

"Today, who wanted it more won and we wanted it more," said Christopher Smart, Ravens coach.

Smart said he was determined to win the A League with Ravens because he could not deal with what his coaching colleagues would say if he did not.

"They said 'three consecutive finals and can't win. If I don't win I should not come back to the stadium'," Smart said.

Two seasons ago, as coach of Friendship, Smart lost out in the final of the intermediate league, and last season, when he took over Ravens, they lost to Arnett Gardens, also in the intermediate final.

"I don't know what I would have done if we had not won, but I have to give all the credit to the women," Smart said.

In the Division C final, Molynes squandered an early 3-0 lead after Speg dashed the game's first centre pass. Ayesha Dobson, with 17 goals from 28 attempts, led the way for the Arline Findlay-coached Speg, while Dhamika While, 12 from 18, got most points for Molynes.

Corealett McDonald starred for Ravens in the A League final, dumping 31 goals from 35 attempts. Phillis Thompson supported well with six goals from seven attempts.

Although for the most part a three-goal game, Ravens led at one stage in the third quarter by six before Nicole Brown's injection at goal-attack sparked life into Molynes who pulled as close as one to Ravens.

For Molynes, Christina Salmon shot 23 from 24, while Althea Keen and Brown both scored six from seven.
