Veronica Campbell of Jamaica (right) crosses the finish line to win the women's 100 metres dash in 10.99 seconds ahead of Lisa Barber of the U.S., who finished second in 11.06 seconds, at the Adidas Track Classic in Carson, California, last Sunday.

JAMAICA'S OLYMPIC 200 metres champion Veronica Campbell has produced the only sub-11 seconds 100m clocking this year so far.

Despite almost being halfway into the season, Campbell's performance to win the women's 100m dash at last Sunday's Adidas Track Classic held at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, was special.

Shaking off back-to-back defeats to compatriot Sherone Simpson in the 200m, Campbell returned to win the dash in 10.99 seconds and thus was easily voted The Gleaner's Top Performer of the Week.

The time was her second sub-11 seconds performance in two years at the Adidas meet, following her 10.96 clocking to win last year.

Campbell's victory came when she finished ahead of World Indoor 60m gold medal winner and American champion MeLisa Barber (11.06), Torri Edwards, an ex-world champion (11.17), Muna Lee (11.23) and Jamaican Aleen Bailey (11.27).

WORLD-LEADER

The winning time pushed Campbell, a silver medallist at the Helsinki World Championships last year, ahead of fellow Jamaican, Kerron Stewart, as the world-leader in the event this season. Stewart's time was 11.03

Campbell was happy with her performance.

"I'm just having fun this year since there are no major championships going on," she said after the race.

"Everything I do this year I'm just doing it in preparation for 2007-08," she said.

"This is my first 100m this season and I am quite happy, 10.99, what more can I ask for?"
